Serve the City Cape Town started their Wednesday serving sessions a week ago, visiting a township in Stellenbosch called Ikanini, the Xhosa word for illegal. It lies right next to the main township, where some 30000 people stay, but other than Kayamandi, has only a few water points, no sewage system, and none of the shacks have elect

To be completely honest, I think we get caught up with building things that are not according to the pattern of God. He has a pattern, a blueprint, if you will. But we throw in all these things that either have nothing to do with the way God builds, or the thing that we have brought in is good and acceptable, but we then define it as a must. Both are not helpful.
Many, many years ago, Abraham headed to a land that he had been promised by God. He arrived in that land of promise, but it was still…

On Saturday I went to the home of an Iranian couple and their baby girl. I met them last year volunteering at Foyer Selah, a centre for refugees run by The Salvation Army.
They now have their orange card to stay here for one year and a nice apartment to live in - a far cry from the one room they had to themselves at the centre.
But life is still not easy - they are looking for jobs, looking for community. They miss Iran and their families there, they are troubled and saddened by the violence t…

Dear Friends,
Has your heart been touched by the unbelievable horror on the individual faces of the victims of the earthquake in Haiti? I know our staff’s hearts have been, especially since we have friends from there.
Global Hope Network International Switzerland (swiss humanitarian organization based in Geneva) is partnering with aid workers with a long history of effective work in Haiti. We have chosen them because they make maximum use of the resources given them and because they possess a…

It's quite possible that one can become wary of all the 'new year's resolutions' with the start of a new year. I don't believe they are evil. I just know there is a lot of hype that can usually go down the drain after a few weeks or even days.
With this, you can expect a plethora of pastors and other various church leaders to try and spur their people on to greater things in 2010. Of course I am up for seeing God's people become active in serving, in ministry, but ultimately as God stirs. Yes,…

For those who have studied the Gospels and the life of Jesus, it is quite easily recognisable that He spent most of His time training up the twelve. Jesus knew the importance of pouring His life into a smaller group, which would then be able to impact thousands upon thousands of people (as evidenced in the book of Acts).
But, though Jesus spent time giving so much to the twelve, He also regularly interacted with the crowds. Why? Jesus was the great shepherd (…

Aisling, one of our Brussels Serve the City leaders, discovered a group of 5 Polish people living on the street, under the E411 behind Carrefour on Blvd Souverain. She has visited them several times, brought them spaghetti, prayed with them, and enjoyed their company. I met them last Saturday and took some of Vittorio's Christmas boxes for the poor. They were so thankful. Please, let's not forget them this Christmas. One of them has been living there for 2 years. It's so cold outside, pray for t…

On Monday 14 December The Well in Brussels hosted Blankets for Pakistan to raise money for Christians attacked in August in Gojra, Pakistan. 10 were killed and over 1000 left homeless when attacked by 15,000 Muslim extremists. Like many Muslims, Christians, and others around the world, we deplore the loss of human life and needless suffering when anyone is persecuted or harmed in any way for their faith.
One of our friends in Brussels has a firsthand connection with the Christian community in G…

Thanks to the Well faith community tonight in Brussels, the South Africa team has the money they need to finish the renovation on the home for their team to live in. We asked 'what would Jesus want for Christmas?' and suggested he would want us to remember the poor. We made a passionate plea to support the SA team who needed 2100 euros. We collected 1285 and presented it to Lourens and the team, and immediately afterwards two people gave 200 + 725 (a loan) - and we were there! Many thanks to all…

On Thursday, the 26th of November, we had the privilege to serve an elderly lady by working in her garden.
We are five South African volunteers who’s mission is to serve people around us. In Amsterdam we were asked to help Mrs. Heil, an elderly lady, to take out all the trees, bushes and grass in her backyard. This had to be done, because Mrs. Heil can not manage the garden on her own anymore and therefore have to pave the backyard.
It was a very cold and rainy day and at first it looked like…

The first Serve the City in England took place on Saturday November 21st. We had 50 people involved, including students and families, we just did the morning, then ended with a lunch together at St. Peter's church that included tenants from Adullam Homes, (folk who've fallen on hard times) which was very special for us and them.
It was a really good beginning, we've formed 3 partnerships with local organisations, and will meet in a couple of weeks to plan the next STC, but for now, we're gratef…

Hi all,
As the Founder/Director for Serve the City I thought I needed to see firsthand what the Cape Town team was doing, so in September I went to visit them - and I was amazed! They are doing fantastic work and I really want to see them succeed. I've been in the house they are renovating and it definitely needs the work, but they are doing a great job. I can assure you that any investment in the Cape Town Serve the City team will go a long way! In many ways, I'm convinced that what Serve the…

Good day.
This letter is written by Serve the City Cape Town, and it is here to bring our situation to your attention.
You might even call it a plight.
Serve the City Cape Town's base is on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. We started in February, when a group of young people came together and decided to join hands and make a difference in the area, the world we live in. We wanted to take a fresh perspective with us. We decided that if there is any way that we are going to help, we will do it li…

We just finished with our concert last week, and what a good concert it was!
We here at STC CPT were responsible for writing and directing a concert at the school we work at. The concert was themed around a typical class in Vlottenburg primary school. The kids being very naughty and impossible. The teacher (being a bit slow) has been notified about a surprise visit from the inspector of schools from the department of education. The inspector comes around every now and then to evaluate the teach…

Hi everyone- so we all met last Saturday and learned cool staff that is going on in Brussels.
WE brainstormed and came up with a very simple but powerful project- let's give free photographs this Christmas to the homeless and families that cannot afford them, and let's do something special for their kids.
We will be partnering up with an ongoing organization serving Park Place in Norfolk.
On December 12 we will be helping with the kid's Christmas celebration including giving them Christmas gift…

20 people representing current or potential Serve the City teams in Norfolk, Chesapeake, Brussels and Gabarone met at Symphonic Church Saturday 7 November. We introduced ourselves and told stories of serving, especially ways it has impacted our lives. We gave news of Serve the City around the world, including an invitation from Cape Town to join them for projects during the World Cup.
We gave an update from the Brussels team, which included a growing understanding of leadership roles helpful to…

On the menu: cow stomach, wrapped in bread, with chicken caught, killed, and cooked up by Mama Constance herself.
Traditional Dinner. In Kayamandi.
Our friend Yanga had invited us over for a traditional meal, so we showed up on Tuesday night with our stomachs hungry and no idea what to expect.
We were welcomed in by our hostess for the evening, Mama Constance, and we played with the kids and watched a gospel TV show while the last preparations were being made. Eventually, all the dishes were…
